Most accommodations are located in the Pinheiros (highlighted in yellow on the map below) and in the Jardins (highlighted in greed on the map below) neighborhoods, which are conveniently close to the University (the venue is indicated by a red circle on the university campus). Both areas provides reasonable transportation options and easy access to various restaurants, bars, and other amenities. If you prefer to book accommodation not listed below, we recommend choosing this region or another nearby area.

Visa information

Not all foreigners are required to previously apply for a Visit Visa before travelling to Brazil.

On the grounds of reciprocity, due to bilateral and multilateral international agreements, some nationalities are exempt from Visit Visas.

If you need a visa please follow this guideline to apply for a visa.
If you need a visa and have a passport from Australia, Canada or the United States, then you can issue an electronic visa. Follow this link for more information.
If you need a visa and have been regularly admitted in the State of Israel and stay in the country under legal immigration status, you may apply for a Visit Visa for Conferences and Seminars, in accordance to the following procedures.
In case the Brazilian authorities request letters of invitation from the organizers of the Algebra Meeting please let us know (sending an e-mail to: algebra2024@ime.usp.br). We shall send you the necessary letter.

Attention. Starting from April 2024, 2025 passport holders from Australia, Canada, and the United States will require a visa for entry into Brazil.

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. English and Spanish are usually understood, and sometimes spoken, in airports, travel agencies, hotels and restaurants.

The time zone for São Paulo is GMT - 3:00.

Mains Electricity
The standard voltage in São Paulo is 110 - 120 volts. Some buildings (including several hotels) have additional 220-volt power plugs, as a rule clearly marked. The current standard for power outlets in Brazil looks like this:

Tap water may not be safe to drink. Prefer filtered or bottled mineral water.

From the Guarulhos airport to São Paulo

The International Airport of Guarulhos is located approximately 28 kilometers from São Paulo city and 47 kilometers from the University of São Paulo. There are 3 official transport options:

Official Taxi:
Inside Guarulhos Airport there are transport counters, where you can request a taxi without pre-booking. There are regular taxis (painted white) that operate on a meter.

Transport by App:
It is also possible to use transport via app (Uber and 99), for this you must find the company's terminals which are located close to the exits of the different terminals.

Subway:
GRU Airport offers free transportation between Terminals 1, 2, 3, and the CPTM Station. The buses have airport identification and stop on the arrivals floor of the three terminals. Waiting time is up to 15 minutes. Transfer opening hours are from 04:00 to 00:00.

To take the metro to São Paulo you must first take the free shuttle from the airport to the CPTM Station, where you must take the "Expreso Aeroporto" line. The waiting time is one hour, and the price is 5 Brazilian reais (approximately 1 dollar).

Public transport in São Paulo

Subway (Metrô de São Paulo):
Nowadays, it has 6 lines that cover a large portion of the city and as a tourist, you can get basically anywhere that matters by metro.
If you are coming to Escola de Álgebra, probably you're going to stay in neighborhoods like Jardins, Vila Mariana, Vila Madalena, Pinheiros, which are the most central, and tourist zones of the city. Taking a metro from or to those places is very easy, so you don't need to be worried! You'll feel comfortable using the metro!
The price of a metro ticket is 5 Brazilian reais (approximately 1 dollar) and must be purchased at metro stations, where it can be paid using a debit or credit card, or cash.

Bus:
In São Paulo there are, in total, 31 municipal terminals (under the management of the City Hall) and others (under the management of the State government) where there is integration with Metro stations. The bus price is 4.40 Brazilian reais (approximately 0.9 dollars) and must be paid on the bus in cash.

Currency Exchange

If you're looking for a quick way to exchange money in São Paulo, airport kiosks are a great option. They offer a variety of services, which makes them a convenient choice.

Most airport kiosks accept major credit cards and cash, so you can choose whichever method is best for you. They also offer a variety of currencies, so you can find the one that is most convenient for your needs.

You can also exchange money using exchange offices (MoneyGram, Western Union, etc.) and banks. Generally, exchange offices have a more convenient price than banks.

Please, note that you will need cash if you want to use public transport.

  There is a guide on your phone available at the time, and there is a guide in both Portuguese and English.

• Have a tour at Instituto Butantan. Instituto Butantan is a Brazilian biologic research center located in Butantã, near by the USP. It is world-renowned for its collection of venomous snakes, as well as those of venomous lizards, spiders, insects and scorpions. By extracting the reptiles' and insects' venoms, the Institute develops antivenoms and medicines against many diseases, which include tuberculosis, rabies, tetanus and diphtheria.
